“Hi Jack, Bye Jack”
- L.A. Confidential -
Who wasn’t amazed when – out of the blue – police detective Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) was shot and killed by police captain Dudley Smith (James Cromwell)? Those who read the novel I guess. The scene gave us two surprises at once. The death a main character, and the revelation of who the big bad guy was all along. This scene also proves important for the plot when Vincennes’ last words ‘Rollo Tomasi’ give Ed Exley the vital info needed to solve the case. Adding to the shock is the suddenness by which it occurs and the deafening gun shot. This is certainly one of the best movie shocks ever.
DUDLEY SMITH: What’s this all about, boyo?
JACK VINCENNES: Part of it has to do with a murder. I have been working with Ed Exley on it.
DUDLEY SMITH: Don’t start doing the right thing, boyo. You haven’t had the practice.
DUDLEY SMITH: So what does Exley make of all this?
JACK VINCENNES: Well, I haven’t told him yet. I just came straight from the records room.
DUDLEY SMITH: Have you a valediction, boyo?
JACK VINCENNES: Rollo Tomasi.
