“On the Road”
- Weekend -
The title ‘Weekend’ sounds idyllic, but the film turns out to be a nightmare of traffic jams, rape, murder, pillage and cannibalism. Jean-Luc Godard’s savage satire is a ferocious attack on consumerism. A bickering, scheming, bourgeois couple leave Paris for the French countryside to claim the inheritance of her dying father. Almost immediately, they became entangled in a cataclysmic traffic jam. Godard treats us to a stunning ten-minute tracking shot through the horrors of the consumer civilization. Along the road there are countless of absurdities; fighting people, a circus car, people playing chess between cars, a sailing boat, et cetera. The protagonists only get out occasionally to argue with other drivers. At the end of the line, car wrecks and severed bodies await us. It’s a nightmarish vision of society which has descended into absolute anarchy.
