At the end of PLANET OF THE APES, time traveller George Taylor (Charlton Heston) finds out that the damn dirty apes at the planet he stranded on weren’t always in charge. Supreme ape Dr. Zaius destroys a huge cave and tells Taylor to go find his destiny. Taylor leaves with his primate girl. When they’re riding on the beach, Taylor notices the remains of the Statue of Liberty and he realises he has been on earth all along. Dr. Zaius has just destroyed the last remains of human civilization. The tortured reaction by Taylor is a fantastic bit of acting by Heston. ‘You maniacs. You blew it all up. Damn you all to hell!’ One of the greatest Sci-Fi endings in one of the best films of the sixties.
