In Michelangelo Antonioni’s BLOW-U P, the hip but unfriendly photographer Thomas (David Hemmings) blows up the photos he shot earlier in the park. He made shots of a couple of who it is unclear if they are just romantically cuddling or struggling. The woman (Vanessa Redgrave) came after the photographer and seduced him to get the film back. He made sure she got the wrong one and in this brilliantly edited scene he starts looking at the blow-ups more closely. He discovers there could be more to this. What’s beautiful is that you, like Thomas, will really be looking for clues and trying to analyse the shots. Eventually we get to see a very revealing photo. The truth is out there. A fascinating piece of paranoia filmmaking.
