“A Voice and a Vision”
- Aguirre: The Wrath of God -
Madness in the Amazon with Klaus Kinski. He plays Aguirre, a power-hungry conquistador who attempts to find El Dorado, the city of gold. Anyone in his expedition group who doesn’t obey him like a god is murdered. Just like this unlucky Spaniard. He speaks bad of Aquirre who then says; ‘This man is a head taller than me. That me change.’ One of his underlings then sneaks up behind the man while he is counting to ten. After ‘nine’ his head is cut of. The head on the floor then finishes the count with ‘ten’ (hehehe). After this power display, Aguirre declares: ‘I’m the great traitor. There must be no other. Anyone who even thinks about deserting this mission will be cut up into 98 pieces. Those pieces will be stamped on until what is left can be used only to paint walls. Whoever takes one grain of corn or one drop of water more than his ration will be locked up for 155 years. If I, Aguirre, want the birds to drop dead from the trees, the birds will drop dead from the trees. I am the wrath of God. The earth I pass will see me and tremble.’ In this portrait of ruthless greed and insane ambition, Aguirre is telling his men that they are nothing more than slaves to him.
