“Battle for Hoth”
- Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back -
The space battle around the Death Star in ‘Episode IV’ seemed impossible to beat in the sequel. But Lucas and co pulled it off with this insanely cool, large scale, battle. The first smart move was to unexpectedly place the battle in the beginning of the film, making it one of the coolest beginnings for a sci-fi movie ever. Secondly, they changed the location from space to ice-planet Hoth, thus creating the need for some very stylish new vehicles. Especially those imperial AT-AT walkers look terrific. Of course, the approaching imperial fleet with that brilliant imperial march is also delicious. Thirdly, we are reunited with all these great characters. Darth Vader, who fanatically controls the ground assault, is especially captivating. The scene in which he replaces Admiral Ozzel for Admiral Piett deserves a place in ‘Classic Scenes’ on its own. Last, but not least, the battle is as tense as the Death Star fight with the empire constantly getting the upper hand, but the rebellion bravely fighting back. The eventual outcome is pretty fair; the rebels may lose their base, but at least they manage to escape. In the first movie, the rebels destroyed the Death Star, now the empire takes their base. Fair trade. The movie isn’t called THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK for nothing.
